ADDITIVES
A) Nanolignin

Under the framework of the Redondo Project, Cnano will produce and functionalise lignin nanoparticles via a green water-based method leading to reinforced polymeric materials with advanced properties such as thermal stability, fire retardancy and antioxidant activity. This will be accomplished via Cnano’s Pilot Line (PL), developed in the framework of BIOMAC Project, which enables the tailored production of biobased NPs as well as the semi-industrial freeze-dryer to produce dry batches. Cnano’s characterisation infrastructure includes UV-Vis, FT-IR spectroscopy, DLS, TG-DTA and SEM so that it enables the monitoring of the structure and properties of the novel lignin-based additives.

B) Cellulose-based nanoadditives

At ITENE, we develop alternative raw materials, their synthesis, and their functionalisation for subsequent use as packaging material, inks, and adhesives. We also develop nanoadditives to innovate and improve the properties of the raw materials. Polymeric materials including these additives are called nanocomposites, which have new functionalities and enhanced properties.

Through this project, ITENE is developing:

- Cellulose pulp from biomass will be converted into nanocellulose by mechanical grinding.

- Cellulose nanofibers will be chemically modified to achieve with hydrophobic properties.

- The hydrophobic properties will improve the dispersion of the fibres into the rPEX.

- The nanoscopic fibres will reinforce the rPEX matrix by distributing the intermolecular forces through the bulk of the polymer, without compromising its integrity.

- Ad hoc chemical modification will be tested to provide flame retardant properties to the cellulose nanofibers.
